Is Goal-Setting Played Out?
When I was a Health Coach, the company I worked with used the SMART goal structure to help new clients break down their BIG dreams into actionable steps.
Our first interactions with new users in the health and fitness app would involve targeted questions to help them establish something called a "Big Picture" or a SMART statement. Before we get into the, let's break down what SMART stands for.
Using this structure, coaches were equipped with a tool that allowed them to motivate users in the day-to-day when they felt frustrated or discouraged. I realized anyone could do this for themselves, so before we get into the 7 areas of life to set goals in, let's talk a little about SMART goals.
S.M.A.R.T. Stands for . . .
- Specific - (What, Why, & How) A goal must be clear, well-defined and focused. Write down exactly what you want to accomplish.
- Measurable - Quantify, quantify, quantify! How will you know your goal has been achieved and how can you track progress along the way.
- Achievable - Is your goal realistic? Always consider the time, resources, and skills needed to ensure your goal is tangible. It can be counterproductive to set a goal you might not reach. PRO TIP: If a goal is too big it might help to break it down to smaller goals/milestones.
- Relevant - Make sure your goal is "on brand." A relevant goal is meaningful to you and certifies the energy you spent made a direct positive impact on your purpose or overall mission.
- Time-bound - Clearly identify your deadline. This helps create a sense of urgency and prevent pesky procrastination.
Once you've walked through and answered the questions in each part of the formula you should be able to craft a super sentence that encompasses all aspects of your goal, also known as your "SMART Statement."
